A1. Fuel Ethanol is a high octane, liquid transport fuel that is made from fermenting sugars and then extracting the alcohol (ethanol). If the feedstock from which Fuel Ethanol is made is produced sustainably then ethanol is a renewable fuel. LOSONOCO makes Fuel Ethanol from the biodegradable waste that is currently buried in landfill.

A2. Fuel Ethanol from waste reduces the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG's) that cause global warming in three ways:

1. The process by which it is made has 90% lower GHG's than refining an equivalent amount of petroleum.
2. Fuel Ethanol itself has up to 50% lower sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide and particulate emissions than petroleum.
3. By making the Fuel Ethanol from waste, LOSONOCO is diverting that waste from landfill and thereby saving the methane emissions that would otherwise be produced as it decomposes.

A3. New engines from all major car manufacturers are Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) compliant and can run on up to 85% ethanol. FFV engines are essentially identical to petroleum engines, with the major modification being replacing the engine management chip with one that is tuned for ethanol instead of petroleum. Additionally Fuel Ethanol can be used as a 5%-10% blend with petroleum under the EU quality standard EN 228. This blend requires no engine modification and is covered by vehicle warranties.

A4. E85 is the term for motor fuel blends of up to 85% Fuel Ethanol and just 15% petroleum.

A5. It is available in a limited number of outlets today but will become universally available at all gas & petrol stations across the western world.

A6. Regular unleaded petroleum has an octane rating of 87; E85 has an octane rating ranging from 100-105 that provides for superior engine performance. For example, Saab FFV engines produce 20% more power when using E85 fuel than their standard petrol engines.

Regular unleaded petroleum also has a large number of impurities in it which ultimately lead to coking up and disintegration of engine parts. Fuel Ethanol is a very pure (99.8%) fuel which does not have these impurities so it should be better for your engine over the long term.

A7. Theoretically it's possible but it is not recommended.

A8. Rotting rubbish emits explosive gases and polluting liquids. Methane emissions contribute to Global Warming and have a 23x greater effect than carbon dioxide. Landfill also creates problems for local communities. Nuisances include more traffic, noise, odours, smoke, dust, litter and pests.

A9. The energy recovery ratio (energy produced divided by energy used) is very low. Incineration causes pollution in the form of emissions from the chimney and it is very unpopular with local communities. There are also significant residues of bottom ash and toxic fly ash to be disposed of.

A10. Bio-diesel is a renewable transport fuel made mainly from vegetable oils. It is produced from plant material by a simple chemical process. The resulting Bio-diesel (or Methyl Ester) can be used in all diesel engines with little or no modification either on its own or as a mixture with conventional diesel. In Europe rapeseed (canola) is the primary feedstock used to make Bio-diesel; in the USA, soybean oil is the primary feedstock.
